Staten Island Advance: Rep. Elise Stefanik hints at N.Y. governor run at Staten Island GOP dinner
By Owen Reiter
‘Rep. Elise Stefanik, chair of the House Republican Conference, attended the Staten Island GOP’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Monday at the Vanderbilt at South Beach.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis introduced Stefanik, who represents New York’s 21st Congressional District and has been considering a run for governor of the state, according to the Associated Press. She received a warm welcome from a room packed with the borough’s GOP representatives and supporters.
Malliotakis, a Republican who represents Staten Island, was first to bring up a Stefanik gubernatorial run.
“I believe that Elise Stefanik would make a great governor because she would reinstate common sense, put public safety first, and make New York affordable once again,” Malliotakis said.
“Those are the things that Republicans, Democrats and Independents are desperately seeking. We want to end New York’s disastrous one-party rule, and she is our best shot to fire Kathy Hochul and get someone who will put New York’s hardworking taxpayers first,” Malliotakis added.
Stefanik, a strong supporter of President Trump, spoke about the economy, crime, taxes and the border crisis, amongst others.
While not yet formally announcing a run for governor, Stefanik said, “We are helping the party all across the state. We have to win the local elections, but I’m strongly considering it, and grateful for the outpouring of support.”
Staten Island GOP Chairman, Assemblymember Michael Tannousis, said, “I think it’s a strong indication that she is seriously contemplating a run for governor.
“I’m happy that she came here today. We had a very strong showing of Republicans in Staten Island, with a room packed full of people, and a lot of support and enthusiasm for her, for President Trump and the Republican ideals on Staten Island.”
Malliotakis and Tannousis presented Stefanik with the Lincoln Legacy Award.
Other honorees included WABC radio host Sid Rosenberg (Beacon of Freedom Award), Robert McFeeley (Lifetime Leadership Award) and Jordan Hafizi (Emerging Patriot Award).
The event also drew Assemblymembers Michael Reilly and Sam Pirozzolo, and Councilmembers David Carr and Frank Morano.
Judge Bob Helbock, former councilmember Joe Borelli, former district attorney Dan Donovan, former deputy borough president Ed Burke, Curtis Sliwa and artist Scott LoBaido were also present.
Dominique Treglia sang the National Anthem, followed by Anthony Reinhart’s children, Nicholas, 8, and Gabriella,4, who led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.’
