U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, and 11 other lawmakers sat down with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to discuss the northern border, supply chains and other joint issues.
“I appreciate Canada’s partnership in reopening the Northern Border and have urged bilateral coordination and continued progress towards fully restoring cross-border travel,” Stefanik said after the meeting.
Last week, the land border between the U.S. and Canadareopenedfor travelers to cross for the first time in 20 months. Most travelers must show proof of vaccination upon entering either country. Canada also requires travelers to get a negative PCR test before their journey. Only some U.S. states say travelers must have a negative test.
With communities in New York’s North Country and Canada deeply entwined, the border closure due to the pandemic meanteconomic and personal hardshipsfor many.
Trudeau will meet with President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the White House on Thursday for a North American Leaders’ Summit to discuss the pandemic, immigration and climate change, among other topics.
