Washington, D.C. –Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has introduced the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commemorative Coin Act along with Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence (D-MI). The companion bill in the Senate is led by Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). This legislation authorizes the Department of the Treasury to mint 400,000 $1 silver coins in 2020 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. The 19th amendment was ratified in 1920 after a long fight to give women the constitutional right to vote.
“I am honored to celebrate the tireless work of women’s suffrage activists through the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commemorative Coin Act, and I have a deep appreciation for the women who led the charge before us in securing our constitutional right to vote and participate in democracy,”said Congresswoman Stefanik.“It is my hope that this bipartisan legislation to commemorate 100 years of women’s right to vote will encourage women all across our democracy to continue to be active participants in civic life. I am looking forward to celebrating the 100th anniversary next year in my district, where one of the most vocal advocates for women’s suffrage, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was born and grew up in Johnstown, New York.”
“This historic centennial offers an unparalleled opportunity to commemorate this victorious milestone of the women’s suffrage movement,”said Congresswoman Lawrence.“Today, over 68 million women participate in elections, which would not be possible without the brave suffragists who never gave up the fight for equal rights. I’m proud to support this legislation and continue to celebrate the outstanding achievements of those who fought diligently for women’s right to vote.”
The Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commemorative Coin Act will not cost any taxpayer dollars—all funding will come from the sale of the coins to private citizens. After the government is reimbursed for all costs associated with producing the coin, proceeds from the coin will support the Smithsonian Institution’s American Women’s History Initiative.
