Veterans & Military Families

The North Country understands the special pride, tradition and history of the United States military. The brave men and women stationed at Fort Drum and their families sacrifice so much to protect our freedoms, both abroad and at home. We can never thank them enough.

Fort Drum is home to the 10th Mountain Division, the most frequently deployed unit in the U.S. Army since 9/11 and the largest single site employer in New York State.

In Congress, Elise led the fight to protect Fort Drum from cuts included in the devastating defense sequestration by unifying the entire New York Congressional delegation. Because of Elise’s leadership and community support, Fort Drum had the fewest cuts of any Army installation. Fort Drum remains critical to preserving a strong national security and contributes to the economic well-being of the community. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Elise is committed to rebuilding our nation’s military readiness and securing a successful future for Fort Drum in Northern New York.

After years of leading the effort on behalf of Fort Drum on the House Armed Services Committee, the Department of Defense has announced that Fort Drum is the preferred designation for an East Coast Missile Defense Site. Elise led the effort to unite much of the New York Congressional Delegation around the selection of Fort Drum, and she fought hard to secure this important designation for out region. This development would create nearly 1,500 jobs in our community and boost our local economy by over $220 million per year. This is a major win for the North Country!

Additionally, our district is the home of more veterans than any other district in New York State. Elise is honored to serve these heroes, and our offices have helped recover over $2.5 million in VA benefits for those who have served.

We must keep the promises and commitments we’ve made to our military veterans by ensuring needed services and care are always available and delivered in a timely fashion. This includes adequate and safe equipment, healthcare for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, traumatic brain injuries and other service-related ailments, job opportunities and training and post-service career resources, as well as the disability and retirement benefits they’ve earned through their courageous service. Elise is a leading voice in Washington advocating for veterans and military families in the North Country.
While in Congress, Elise has kept her promises to New York’s 21st District by taking the following actions:
