SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. —

Campaigning is going strong in the North Country as it’s the most expensive Congressional race in New York, indicating how high the stakes are.

Former Vice President and presidential candidate Joe Biden has endorsed Democratic candidate Tedra Cobb, and Republican Elise Stefanik campaigned Saturday in Saranac Lake with her second rally in two weeks.Advertisement

For Stefanik, the rally on Saturday was an exciting event.

“People are eager to hear from candidates directly. It’s a stark contrast with my opponent, who has really just stayed in her house and hasn’t done many of these types of events. People are excited to be here. You can see the enthusiasm. This is probably one of the biggest rallies we’ve had in the tri-lakes area.”

Masks and social distancing were in place at Riverside Park, and voters there said they can’t wait to cast their ballot in November.

Ray Scollin, a Saranac Lake resident, expressed his support for Stefanik, “Elise is very bipartisan. Many of the agencies that measure that have shown that to be true. The North Country stands behind Elise Stefanik.

Win Belanger, a Willsboro resident, said being able to see Stefanik in person and going to an actual event means a lot to him.

“I like people that just come out and want to talk to you. It’s important to me to meet the candidates, not see them on Zoom. I attended a couple of Elise Stefanik’s opponent Zoom meetings. Wasn’t impressed. Decided to get off of that and come here and support somebody that wanted to talk to me.”

Cobb says she plans on having drive-in rallies soon to keep people safe while getting her massage out.

“This is really crucially important. We want to make sure that our businesses can stay open, our schools can stay open, our frontline workers are protected. As a person who has worked in public health for over 30 years, I’m going to live those values.”
