WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik co-sponsored an amendment to the Stronger Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act to fund a national hotline to prevent child abuse in a Wednesday hearing marking up the bill, also known as CAPTA.
Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, said the overall bill supports state systems and focuses on preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens“The Stronger Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act makes critical updates that strengthen the original law in order to further protect our children,”she said in a press release.“This bill provides for evidence-based support for the victims of abuse, establishes national reporting requirements to more accurately track child abuse trends, expands research into child welfare, and improves the grant funding process.”
At Wednesday’s House Education and Labor Committee hearing, Stefanik and fellow co-sponsor Lucy McBath, D-Georgia, suggested the amendment to fund a national hotline for information and reporting on child abuse.
“Part of prevention is providing children with information they need to understand if what they are seeing or experiencing is child abuse,”Stefanik said.
“As Mrs. McBath pointed out, in many cases children want information, yet they don’t feel comfortable going to an adult they know,”Stefanik said in the meeting.“Sometimes they want to talk to someone to better understand if what they’re seeing or experiencing is abuse or neglect. In some cases, adults want to understand specifically how they can report or what they can do to stop child abuse and neglect.”
The amendment was passed unanimously.
